Welcome to the hub of the horoloy
A standout creation blending British craftsmanship with the complexity of the deadbeat seconds
Independent British watchmaker Garrick introduces its latest horological creation the S3 Deadbeat Seconds Power Reserve. This refined evolution of the S3 model, first launched last year, combines the intriguing deadbeat seconds complication with an exceptional level of hand craftsmanship. Representing the pinnacle of Garrick's offerings, the timepiece showcases a distinctive handmade aesthetic and observatory-style hands, all meticulously crafted in-house.
Earlier in 2024, Garrick debuted the S2 Deadbeat Seconds, a watch that replaced the traditional sweeping seconds hand with a ticking deadbeat seconds mechanism. Its unexpected popularity has now inspired the release of the S3 Deadbeat Seconds. The deadbeat seconds, or "dead seconds", complication causes the seconds hand to advance in discrete one-second jumps, contrary to the smooth motion typical of mechanical watches.
While the concept may seem simple, the mechanics behind it are anything but. Normally, the seconds hand moves with each vibration of the balance wheel, five times per second in a movement beating at 18,000 vibrations per hour. The deadbeat system requires additional gearing to reduce that rate to a single tick per second, visible on the dial.
The case is available in either high-grade 904L stainless steel or gold, measuring 42mm in diameter and 11mm in thickness. A sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating ensures excellent legibility, while the exhibition case back offers a captivating view of the intricately finished movement. With water resistance up to 100 meters, the watch is as robust as it is refined.
The open-worked dial, crafted from German silver, provides a striking stage for Garrick’s signature large balance wheel at 6 o’clock. A power reserve indicator with a red hand is positioned at 2 o’clock. Most dial components can be customized to suit the wearer’s preferences. The one-piece German silver chapter ring can be infilled with a color of choice, and the hands, whether observatoire, lancine, spade, or anchor can be ordered in heat-blued, purpled, or polished finishes.
All bridgework and components are hand-beveled and can be finished in a variety of styles, including frosted, grained, or mirror-polished. Wheels are available in gold, silver, or rhodium and can be engraved with intricate motifs.
Powering the watch is the hand-wound caliber DB-G07, rigorously tested and regulated over three weeks to ensure a daily deviation of just +3 seconds, placing it within chronometer standards. The movement beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5 Hz) and offers a 48-hour power reserve.
Strap options are also fully customizable, including handmade alligator, calf leather, buffalo, and ostrich, paired with a 316L stainless steel pin buckle.
Production of the S3 Deadbeat Seconds is extremely limited, with only three to five pieces made annually. Pricing is set at £48,000 which is approximately equivalent to AED 234,000 for the steel version and £57,000 which is approximately equivalent to AED 278,000 for the gold case.
