Konstantin Chaykin Breaks the Record for World's Thinnest Mechanical Watch

For many years, the world’s leading watchmaking companies have been competing to produce the thinnest mechanical watches. Prestigious brands such as PiagetBulgari, and Richard Mille have been at the forefront of this race, with Bulgari securing a prominent position, dominating various categories. Recently, Bulgari made headlines by reintroducing its ultra-thin minute repeater during the first day of the Geneva Watch Days. Piaget previously held the title for the thinnest tourbillon watch at the Watches and Wonders event.

However, a new contender has emerged from Eastern Europe. Russian watchmaker Konstantin Chaykin unveiled a prototype that puts him at the forefront of the ultra-thin watch category.

Introducing Perrelet Unveils The Limited Edition Turbine Skull

Inspired by one of the most famous trends of the third millennium, the Skull Watch

With roots dating back to 1777, Perrelet has long been renowned for its innovative timepieces, particularly those featuring distinctive dials. The brand is best known for its iconic Double Rotor and Turbine technologies, which have captivated enthusiasts with their creative designs and technical brilliance. Perrelet developed and patented the Turbine technology in 2009, a hallmark of its modern collections. Today, many of its watches are powered by the new-generation P-331-MH automatic calibre, which is both COSC and Chronofiable certified.

Today, Perrelet has showcased its creativity by embracing one of the most popular watchmaking trends of the third millennium: the “Skull Watch,” with the release of the new Turbine Skull. This timepiece merges history with contemporary fashion, drawing inspiration from the skull motif, which has deep roots in the history of horology.

Most notably, the skull is featured in Memento Mori, an artistic and symbolic trope serving as a reminder of the inevitability of death. In the 16th and 17th centuries, aristocrats and high clergy, particularly in Germany, wore skull-shaped pendants on thin chains or as necklaces, which concealed a watch that revealed the time when the jaws opened. These timepieces, as the Latin phrase "Memento Mori" translates to "Remember that you must die", served both as a warning about the fleeting nature of life and as a call to live virtuously for a blissful existence.

The Turbine Skull comes in two striking variations, one with a steel case and blue dial, and the other with a black PVD-coated steel case and matching dial. Measuring 44 mm in diameter and 12.65 mm in thickness, the round case is inspired by the original Turbine collection, featuring a case-band with wide grooves, an integrated crown, and elongated lugs for a sleek, refined design. Both the dial and case back are protected by anti-reflective sapphire crystal, with a limited edition inscription, XX/99, printed onto the sapphire crystal, indicating that the watch is limited to 99 pieces.

As with all models in this iconic collection, the silver-colored skull motif is displayed on the black or blue lower dial, which features a guilloché finish. This enhances the 3D design, creating depth and highlighting the precise definition of the skull's anatomical details. The turbine consists of 12 blades made from blue anodized aluminum, with five tungsten counterweights positioned beneath the blades. Time is indicated by Arabic numerals at 15-minute intervals, combined with indices on a black or blue hour track, all filled with Super-LumiNova for a white glow. The central hour and minute hands also feature Super-LumiNova, while a red central seconds hand completes the display.

As previously mentioned, the watch is powered by the in-house automatic calibre P-331-MH, operating at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz). It offers a power reserve of 42 hours and features a main plate with a snailing finish, rhodium-plated for added refinement.

The watch is offered with either a black or blue calf leather strap featuring an alligator pattern, lined with rubber to match the dial color. It is secured with a steel or black PVD steel folding clasp, corresponding to the case material. Additionally, the watch comes with an extra black or blue rubber strap and a fastening tool. The blue dial version is priced at CHF 4,780 / AED 20,700, while the black dial version is priced at CHF 4,980 / AED 21,600.
