Konstantin Chaykin Breaks the Record for World's Thinnest Mechanical Watch

For many years, the world’s leading watchmaking companies have been competing to produce the thinnest mechanical watches. Prestigious brands such as PiagetBulgari, and Richard Mille have been at the forefront of this race, with Bulgari securing a prominent position, dominating various categories. Recently, Bulgari made headlines by reintroducing its ultra-thin minute repeater during the first day of the Geneva Watch Days. Piaget previously held the title for the thinnest tourbillon watch at the Watches and Wonders event.

However, a new contender has emerged from Eastern Europe. Russian watchmaker Konstantin Chaykin unveiled a prototype that puts him at the forefront of the ultra-thin watch category.

Introducing Perrelet Releases the Limited Edition Turbine Splash

A colorful artistic timepiece for the Windup Watch Fair in Chicago

Art has always been a significant aspect of horology, with brands vying to showcase their artistic prowess through intricate designs and innovative aesthetics. This creative rivalry has propelled the watchmaking industry to new heights, where timepieces are not only instruments for measuring time but also works of art. For its first appearance at the Windup Watch Fair in Chicago, a popular watch event in America taking place from July 12 to 14, 2024, Perrelet will present a new timepiece, the Turbine Splash. This limited edition watch features a colorful artistic dial, yet another testament to the boundless imagination of Perrelet's designers.

The Turbine Splash derives its name from the vibrant splashes of color that characterize its lower dial. Random hues of green, yellow, purple, fuchsia, light blue, and orange stand out against a black background, reminiscent of another Perrelet model: the 2022 Turbine Rainbow. Both evoke Jackson Pollock's 'dripping' technique of the 1940s and 1950s. However, while the Turbine Rainbow's lower dial features small, round drops of paint that seem to fall casually from the American painter's brush, the Turbine Splash recalls his spectacular 'action painting' performances, which is also known as "gestural abstraction," emerged in the mid-20th century as a prominent style within Abstract Expressionism, focusing on spontaneous, dynamic gestures.

In these, Pollock threw paint onto canvases, either from the tin or directly with his fingers, using impetuous and choreographic gestures to create dynamic compositions with dense and complex colors that exuded disruptive energy. Similarly, Perrelet's Turbine Splash, with its random use of color, expresses a free and playful creativity that is daring and completely original.

As for the watch's specifications, it comes in a round case made of polycarbonate and carbon fiber, with a flat bezel in stainless steel and a black PVD coating. The watch has a diameter of 44 mm and a thickness of 13.82 mm. The dial is protected by a sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective treatment. The watch features a fluted case band, and a stainless steel caseback with a black PVD coating that has a sapphire crystal glass.

The watch utilizes Turbine technology, with 12 black anodized aluminum turbine blades and five tungsten counterweights over the dial. The central hour and minute hands are equipped with white Super-LumiNova, while the central seconds hand is in red. The indices match the colors of the lower dial, and are luminescent with tritium (T25) encapsulated in borosilicate tubes. These tubes contain a phosphor layer that emits a sharp, long-lasting glow when activated by tritium electrons.

The watch is powered by the in-house calibre P-331-MH, an automatic movement that is COSC and Chronofiable certified, operating at 28,800 vph (4 Hz). It has a power reserve of 42 hours and features an open-workedrhodium-plated oscillating weight adorned with the Perrelet logo. The Turbine Splash comes with a black calfskin leather strap with alligator pattern and rubber lining, with a folding clasp in black PVD stainless steel. It is limited to 99 pieces and priced at CHF 5,200, which is equivalent to AED 21,500.
