Inspired by the Original Iconic 1957 Model
The Speedmaster collection by “Omega” is one of the most famous and iconic watch collections in the history of luxury watchmaking. Launched in 1957, the collection quickly became an integral part of space history and space exploration, earning global fame. In 1965, the Speedmaster was officially adopted by NASA for space missions, and in 1969, it became a part of the Apollo 11 mission when astronauts wore it during their historic moon landing, earning it the nickname "Moonwatch." The collection also includes many previous editions that achieved great success, including the "Speedmaster" that Omega reintroduced to the new generation, reviving the first Omega watch in space. Today, we will showcase the latest release from the collection, the "Speedmaster Pilot" watch, inspired by the original 1957 model.
The case of the watch comes with a brushed stainless steel design with a diameter of 40.85 mm. It has a thickness of 14.7 mm and a lug-to-lug measurement of 49.6 mm, providing a balanced fit on the wrist. The watch is equipped with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, treated with anti-reflective coatings on both sides for enhanced clarity and tachymeter scale on the aluminum bezel insert. Additionally, the timepiece offers impressive water resistance of 10 bar (100 meters), making it suitable for a variety of conditions while maintaining its durability and functionality. The caseback is elegantly engraved with the iconic Seahorse medallion, a signature feature that adds a distinctive touch to the overall design.
The "Speedmaster Pilot" features a striking matte black dial with a grained texture, accented by a silver rhodium-plated minute track that is brushed to match the case and pushers. The dial is designed with a twin counter, one at 9 o'clock and another at 3 o'clock, both with opaline centers and beveled edges. The counter-seconds register at 9 o'clock features a cockpit-inspired target design with a blue horizon for small seconds, while the 3 o'clock counter houses the chronograph minute and hour hands, with a unique gray hour hand for tracking a second time zone. The dial is further enhanced with orange accents, including the minute counter, three-minute indicator, dots at the hour indices, and the airplane-shaped tip of the chronograph seconds hand. Additionally, the "Flight Qualified" inscription in yellow and the yellow running seconds hand add accent. The hour indices are coated with Super-LumiNova for legibility, and the dial is completed with a color-matched date window at 6 o'clock.
The watch is powered by the Omega Calibre 9900, an automatic chronograph movement that features a column wheel and Co-Axial escapement. With a power reserve of 60 hours, it is equipped with two barrels mounted in series and a silicon balance-spring for enhanced precision. Certified as a Master Chronometer by METAS, the movement performs within a remarkable accuracy range of 0/+5 seconds per day and is resistant to magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss. The movement is also decorated with rhodium-plated Geneva waves, further highlighting its exceptional craftsmanship. Additionally, the Omega 9900 boasts a time zone function, and operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. It comes with a stainless steel bracelet and fold over clasp, and priced at CHF 9,000 approximately equivalent to AED 37,500.
