Panerai collaborates once again with the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team for the America's Cup sailing competition
Panerai is a luxury Italian watchmaker known for its distinctive design and association with the Italian Navy. The company was founded in Florence, Italy, in 1860 by Giovanni Panerai. Initially, it specialized in manufacturing precision instruments, including compasses and depth gauges, for the Italian Navy. Later on, Panerai gained recognition for its diving watches, particularly the Radiomir and Luminor collections, which were developed for military use. These watches featured large, luminescent dials and robust cases designed to withstand the rigors of underwater exploration.
In 1998, Panerai introduced the Submersible within the Luminor collection, since then it became an icon for the italian brand. This model boasted a 300-meter water resistance and a dial designed for optimal visibility in challenging conditions. Additionally, it showcased a distinctive cushion-shaped case and a crown-protecting bridge, protecting the crown from potential impacts and ensuring the movement remains water-resistant. Now, Ahead of the 37th America’s Cup scheduled in Barcelona, Panerai once again partnering with the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team for the second consecutive edition, and unveils the latest edition of the “Submersible Tourbillon GMT Luna Rossa Experience” at Watches And Wonders 2024.
Panerai is involved in many sports competitions, particularly the America's Cup sailing competition, and for those who don't know, it is the oldest international competition in any sport. Panerai's journey with this event began in 2017 when it entered the elite sailing domain, assuming the role of an Official Partner and sponsoring renowned teams such as the “Oracle Team USA” and “Softbank Team Japan”. This commitment deepened in 2019 when Panerai became the Official Sponsor of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli for the first time. The climax of this partnership was witnessed during the 36th America's Cup in 2021, held in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf, after 10 hard-fought regattas in the finals that came to an end with a 7 - 3 score in favor of the defender, Emirates Team New Zealand.
The new "Submersible Tourbillon GMT Luna Rossa Experience Edition" represents a significant milestone as the first 45mm Submersible to incorporate a tourbillon, merging it with the avant-garde allure of Carbotech case, a composite material derived from carbon fiber. The unidirectional rotating bezel is crafted from titanium, finished with a black DLC coating, and adorned with white lacquer indexes. The dial is protected by a sapphire crystal, while the movement is shielded by a screw down titanium DLC sapphire crystal case-back.
The open-worked dial showcases the barrel at 6 o'clock, and another one under 12 o’clock alongside the mechanism gears. Additionally, the dial features a patented tourbillon, positioned at 11 o'clock, completing its rotation every 30 seconds. Positioned at 3 o'clock, a 24-hour indicator is displayed on a sub-dial featuring red text for nighttime and white for daytime, while a small second subdial lies at the 9 o'clock position. The hands, indices, and the GMT hand (resembling the Luna Rossa sail), are coated with Super-Luminova for enhanced visibility in low-light conditions.
The watch is powered by the P.2015/T caliber, a hand-wound movement that operates at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4Hz), offering 4 days of power reserve thanks to the double barrels, and incorporates an Incabloc anti-shock device for enhanced durability. Through the case back, you can spot the power reserve indicator opposite the tourbillon. The watch is limited to 20 pieces, and set to debut in July 2024, coinciding with the lead-up to the America’s Cup finals. As a unique offering, owners of this timepiece will have the exclusive opportunity to engage in the America’s Cup finals in Barcelona.
The timepiece comes with two straps: a Luna Rossa bi-material strap rubber with textile, boasting a sporty design highlighted by a red accent as a tribute to the sailing team collaboration. The second strap is made of rubber and rendered in a black hue. Both straps come with a trapezoidal titanium DLC pin buckle.
