A Case Inspired by Pocket Watches and a Dial Capturing Nature's Colors
Laurent Ferrier, a third-generation watchmaker, founded his eponymous brand in 2008 at the age of 63, driven by a desire to create timeless, mechanically perfect timepieces. After working for over 37 years in renowned Swiss watchmaking brands, including Patek Philippe, Ferrier launched his first creation, the Classic Tourbillon Double Hairspring, in 2010. This piece earned the prestigious Best Men’s Watch award at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, marking the brand's entry into the elite watchmaking world.
Over the years, Laurent Ferrier has introduced a range of remarkable timepieces, with notable releases such as the “Série Atelier VI Classic Auto Sandstone”, which we talked about in a previous article. Now, in conjunction with the Watches & Wonders 2025 exhibition, the brand reveals an updated version of this watch, the “Classic Auto Horizon”, featuring a refreshed blue dial. This new iteration builds upon the original design, maintaining its signature elegance while adding a new color to the collection.
The watch comes in an iconic round case inspired by 19th-century pocket watches, with a classic pebble shape that gives the Classic collection its name. Crafted from polished stainless steel, the case measures 40 mm in diameter and 11.94 mm in thickness, offering a refined yet substantial presence on the wrist. A sapphire case back allows for a view of the movement, while the domed sapphire crystals above the dial enhance the watch's vintage-inspired aesthetic. The ball-shaped stainless steel crown adds a unique touch, and the case is water-resistant to 30 meters.
The dial of the Classic Auto Horizon is one of the key features that sets this new version apart from its predecessor. The rich blue tones of the dial are inspired by the natural world, with varying shades that subtly shift in the light, sometimes revealing hints of purple. A translucent blue lacquer coats a base that has been treated with a silver galvanic finish, creating a captivating depth. At the center, a vertical satin-brushed texture contrasts elegantly with the circular satin-brushed minute track that encircles the dial. A refined aperture at 3 o'clock displays the stamped date window in a grey on a white disc, framed by a dark blue transfer. The iconic Assegai-shaped hands, crafted from white gold, point to the hours and minutes, while the small seconds, recessed at 6 o'clock, are snailed and punctuated with dark blue markers. This dial is marked by its sophisticated, nature-inspired hues and is accented with white gold drop-shaped indices that enhance its overall elegance and readability.
The watch is powered by the LF270.01 movement, a self-winding calibre developed exclusively in-house by Laurent Ferrier. This movement features a micro-rotor crafted from 950 platinum. It operates at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4Hz) and offers a power reserve of 72 hours. The movement is composed of 215 components. Its exceptional finishing, including rhodium-plated Côtes de Genève on the bridges, is a testament to the craftsmanship at Laurent Ferrier’s workshops. The LF270.01 features a unidirectional ball bearing for enhanced resistance to impacts and vibrations. The movement’s design draws inspiration from the brand’s first self-winding calibre, and it is carefully decorated by hand, with over 139 finishing operations dedicated to its creation. Visible through the case back, the movement showcases intricate details such as the engraved platinum rotor with a bird-feather motif.
It comes with a hand-stitched taupe goat leather strap with Alcantara lining and stainless steel pin buckle, and priced at CHF 45,000 approximately AED 186,000.
