Paying tribute to the famous Mexican aviator Emilio Carranza
Cuervo y Sobrinos was established in Havana in 1882 and flourished during the island’s golden age, attracting a distinguished clientele that included Einstein, Hemingway, and Churchill. Though its roots are Cuban, the brand is now based in Switzerland, specifically in Capolago near Lugano, making it the only swiss watchmaker with latin heritage.
In its latest release, the brand unveils the Chronograph Emilio Carranza, a tribute to one of Mexico’s most celebrated aviators. Nicknamed the “Lindbergh of Mexico,” Emilio Carranza captured international attention in the 1920s with his daring goodwill flights between Mexico and the United States.
The watch features a stainless steel case measuring 44mm in diameter and 13.8mm in thickness. Its design includes flared lugs with exposed structural screws and rectangular pushers. A double-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating sits atop the dial, while a tachymeter scale encircles the outer bezel. The caseback is engraved with the image of Carranza alongside his aircraft, a poignant reminder of his final flight.
The black dial is adorned with Arabic numerals, while cathedral-style hands filled with cream Super-LumiNova evoke the look of 1920s cockpit instruments. The chronograph layout is classic: a 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock, a 12-hour counter and date window at 6, and a small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock, which features a helix-shaped hand inspired by a spinning propeller. Behind it, an engraved vintage plane adds depth and charm. The red-tipped central seconds hand and applied CyS emblem complete the design.
Powering the watch is the Valjoux 7750, an automatic, cam-operated chronograph movement that beats at 28,800 vph (4 Hz) and offers a 48-hour power reserve. It comes fitted with a vintage-style leather strap with ecru stitching, secured by a stainless steel pin buckle engraved with the Cuervo y Sobrinos logo.
The Cuervo y Sobrinos Chronograph Emilio Carranza (Ref. 3201.1EC) is priced at USD 4,718, or approximately AED 17,500.
