A new take on the iconic Type 20 chronograph flyback
Airain is a French brand with a rich heritage dating back to 1934. It is known for producing good-quality timepieces for both military and civilian use, gaining recognition for its reliable and precise chronographs, particularly the Type 20 model supplied to the French Army and Air Force during the 1950s and 1960s. The brand was revived in 2020 and reintroduced the iconic Type 20. Since then, it has released a series of timepieces inspired by this model. Now, the brand collaborates with French artist seconde/seconde and introduces the Type 20 "Up in the Air."
The watch follows the design of the standard-production models and features a stainless steel case with both brushed and polished finishes. It has a diameter of 39.5mm and a thickness of 10.85mm. The domed sapphire crystal comes with an anti-reflective coating on the inside. Additionally, the watch includes a bidirectional 12-hour bezel and a screw-down caseback.
The black dial features numerals and baton hands coated with Super-LumiNova. It showcases the artist’s Seconde/seconde/ touches within the sub-dials and the Airain logo below the 12 o'clock position. The sub-dials resemble airplane windows and are decorated with pixelated clouds. On the right, the 30-minute chronograph counter displays a picture of the sky, while the small seconds sub-dial on the left showcases the tip of the Eiffel Tower, highlighting the French heritage of the Type 20. Additionally, the "Airain" name on the upper half of the dial is accented with a blue bracket under the letters "Air."
The watch is powered by the brand’s Caliber AM2, a manual-wind flyback chronograph movement with a column wheel, developed for the brand by Manufacture AMT, a brand of Sellita in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The movement runs at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz) and offers a power reserve of 63 hours.
The Type 20 "Up in the Air" comes with a black leather strap and a steel pin buckle, or a blue and black striped NATO strap. It is limited to 88 pieces, with the first 44 pieces delivered in August and the second batch of 44 watches slated for delivery in September. It is priced at USD 3,743, equivalent to AED 13,800.
