The German brand unveils a chronograph that fuses vintage charm with modern durability
In 2020, Hanhart reintroduced the 417 ES, a legendary chronograph whose design dates back more than 60 years. The original model served as the first pilot’s chronograph for the German armed forces. Today, the new version blends the timeless aesthetics of the past with modern production techniques. The result is a robust chronograph built for everyday wear and adventure, enriched by a storied heritage.
The original 417 was launched in 1954, in response to the West German Air Force's post-war need for wrist chronographs. Hanhart produced two versions: one in a brass case, and the 417 ES, short for Edelstahl, the German word for stainless steel.
With the new 417 ES Panda and 417 ES Reverse Panda, Hanhart revives the spirit of the 1960s. Both models are directly inspired by the design of the original 417 ES, updating its vintage character for the modern era.
The stainless steel case features a satin-brushed and polished finish. Measuring 39 mm in diameter and 13.50 mm in height, it offers a balanced wrist presence. The bidirectional rotating bezel includes a black ceramic inlay and a precise 60-click mechanism, adding both functionality and visual contrast.
A high-domed sapphire crystal with internal anti-reflective coating ensures excellent legibility, while the screwed case back, engraved with a consecutive serial number, enhances the watch's sense of exclusivity. The crown is adorned with the historic Hanhart “h” logo, a nod to the brand’s aviation heritage. The case is water-resistant to 100 meters.
Both versions of the watch feature a robust case that is anti-magnetic, shielding the mechanical movement from everyday magnetic fields. The watch also incorporates Hanhart’s proprietary shock protection system for the mechianical movement against impacts, helping to preserve accuracy and reliability even in demanding conditions.
The Panda version presents a white dial with black subdials, while the Reverse Panda features a black dial with white subdials, offering a striking contrast. The dial design evokes vintage chronographs, with a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and a small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock forming a classic bi-compax layout.
The numerals and hands are coated with Super-LumiNova C1 GL X2, providing exceptional readability in low-light environments. The historic wing logo appears prominently on the dial, paying homage to the brand’s roots.
The watch is powered by the hand-wound Sellita SW510 M movement, which beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and offers a power reserve of 58 hours. This reliable cam-operated chronograph caliber is known for its robustness and precision.
For the first time in the 417 ES collection, Hanhart is offering a stainless steel bracelet, equipped with a folding clasp that includes a tool-free fine adjustment mechanism allowing for up to 10 mm of easy sizing. The watch is also available with a high-quality calfskin strap in black, dark brown, or light brown, each fitted with a stainless steel pin buckle engraved with the Hanhart wing logo.
Pricing is set at €2,490 approximately AED 10,715 for the version with a leather strap, and €2,690 approximately AED 11,575 for the version with a stainless steel bracelet.
