Celebrating Two 1970s Icons, Tissot Blends Swiss Watchmaking tradition with the Japanese Cartoon
The 1970s witnessed the birth of the Tissot PRX, which has since become the best-selling watch for the Swiss brand owned by the Swatch Group. Around the same time, the legendary robot cartoon Grendizer also debuted, becoming one of the most popular TV shows worldwide. Now, Tissot pays homage to this iconic character with a special edition of its renowned PRX watch, inspired by Grendizer.
In recent years, video games, cartoons, comic books, manga, and anime have become major sources of inspiration for leading watchmakers. One notable example is Audemars Piguet’s collaboration with Marvel, which led to the highly successful releases of the Royal Oak Concept “Black Panther” and “Spider-Man Tourbillon” editions. Many other brands have followed suit with comic-inspired designs, such as Seiko’s collaboration with Studio Ghibli on the Seiko Presage Nausicaä, a limited-edition watch inspired by the classic 1984 Japanese anime. Similarly, Franck Muller celebrated the Chinese New Year with a Japanese touch, crafting a dial inspired by Japanese manga.
Responding to the growing demand for nostalgic collaborations among watch collectors, Tissot has now entered the scene with a tribute to one of the most beloved cartoons of the pre-millennial era—the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 40mm UFO Robot Grendizer Special Edition.
This special edition features Tissot's signature 40mm 316L stainless steel case, with a sleek profile of just 10.9mm. The case showcases a mix of brushed and polished finishes, accented by a polished bezel and topped with sapphire crystal. The transparent caseback reveals the movement inside.
The deep blue dial features Grendizer’s bust, coated in Super-LumiNova® for a glowing yellow effect, adding a sense of nostalgia that will resonate with fans of the series. The applied hour indices feature green Super-LumiNova®, while the minute and hour hands are similarly illuminated. A Harken-style seconds hand further adds to the design’s retro charm.
Powered by the Powermatic 80 automatic movement, based on the ETA 2824-2, the watch operates at 21,600 vph (3Hz) and offers an 80-hour power reserve. Through the sapphire caseback, you can admire the Grendizer logo engraved on the rotor, alongside the inscription “Tissot x Grendizer.”
Completing the look is an integrated stainless steel bracelet with a quick-release system. The watch comes in a special edition box, adorned with images from the Grendizer TV show, and is priced at EUR 895 (AED 3,660).
