A creative take on the jumping hour complication
Louis Vuitton is a name synonymous with fashion, but in recent years, the brand has been making bold and unexpected moves in watchmaking, especially after acquiring La Fabrique du Temps. These developments have surprised collectors and watch enthusiasts alike, leaving many eager to see what comes next. Reimagining the iconic Tambour in 2023 marked a significant turning point, elevating it into the luxury sports watch category. The brand also gave us a fresh take on the Escale collection, moves that hinted at even more to come.
This year, at its debut appearance at LVMH Watch Week, Louis Vuitton launched the Tambour Convergence. But that wasn’t all, the Maison also launched the Tambour Taiko Spin Time collection. This series of six timepieces showcases Louis Vuitton’s take on the jumping-hour complication, a core feature of its watchmaking expertise since 2009.
Before we start talking about the details, the Tambour Taiko Spin Time collection takes inspiration from the Japanese cultural artistry of taiko drums, blending it seamlessly with Louis Vuitton's legacy of bold designs. At the heart of the collection lies the patented Spin Time mechanism, which replaces traditional hour hands with twelve rotating cubes. These cubes display the hours, flipping to indicate the current time with an in-house movement.
Starting with the most intriguing model, the Tambour Taiko Spin Time Air Antipode, this timepiece offers a fresh perspective on the world-time complication. The cubes on the watch display city names, with 24 cubes representing 48 cities. Each cube features two cities that are 12 hours apart. The dolphin-gray dial, with its rotating yellow triangle hour hand and a world map design on the central disc, provides an intuitive way to read both local and world times. Additionally, the cubes' differing colors indicate AM and PM.
The case is made from 18K white gold and measures 42.5mm in diameter and has a thickness of 12.45mm and features the distinctive Taiko sculpted lugs, with an open caseback. Powered by the automatic LFT ST12.01 caliber, which offers 45 hours of power reserve. It is limited to 50 pieces and has a price tag of EUR 110,000 / AED 405,000.
The Tambour Taiko Spin Time Air Flying Tourbillon elevates the Spin Time concept with the addition of a central flying tourbillon featuring a cage shaped like Louis Vuitton’s iconic Monogram flower. The 42.5mm case, crafted from 18K white gold, matches the Antipode's dimensions at 12.45mm thick.
The grey dial is adorned with 12 rotating cubes, complemented by white gold hands and indices. Powering the watch is the LFT ST05.01 automatic caliber, which delivers a 45-hour power reserve. Limited to just 70 pieces, the watch is priced at EUR 190,000 / AED 700,000.
The Spin Time Air features cubes that appear to float effortlessly between the inner circular dial and the sapphire crystal, creating a captivating visual effect. The watch measures 42.5mm in diameter and 12.45mm in thickness, with an 18K white gold case. The Dolphin Grey cubes spell out “Louis Vuitton” on their faces, adding a signature touch. This timepiece is powered by the automatic LFT ST13.01 caliber, specifically designed with an enhanced architecture to support the extended shafts of the cubes.
This model is limited to 70 pieces and priced at EUR 190,000 / AED 330,000. Additionally, a gem-set version adorned with over 1,000 hand-set diamonds is limited to 30 pieces and available for EUR 160,000 / AED 590,000.
The time-only Spin Time is the most straightforward model in the lineup, housed in a slightly smaller 39.5mm case with a thickness of 12.15mm. Like its larger counterparts, the case is crafted from 18K white gold and features the newly redesigned Taiko lugs. Unlike the Air models, the cubes are enclosed within the dial and transition between grey and light grey to indicate the hour.
With a water resistance of 100 meters, this is the most versatile daily wear option in the collection. Powered by the LFT ST13.01 caliber, it offers a power reserve of 45 hours. The watch is limited to 100 pieces and priced at EUR 80,000 / AED 294,000. An additional gem-set limited edition of 50 pieces featuring baguette diamonds and a hawk’s eye (grey-blue quartz) center is available for EUR 160,000 / AED 590,000.
