Greubel Forsey Hand Made 1 Watch Joins Mark Zuckerberg's Exclusive Collection
Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of Meta (formerly Facebook), has long been known for his impact on the digital world and his approach to innovation. However, what many may not know is that his relationship with watches has evolved dramatically over time. Initially, Zuckerberg was not particularly passionate about timepieces, but over time, he has transformed into a true watch enthusiast, often spotted wearing new and impressive pieces. His passion for watches ignited after an unforgettable moment at a wedding, when he saw the timepiece worn by Anant Ambani, the son of Asia's richest man. The watch, which was valued at around one million dollars, left a lasting impression on Zuckerberg. He later admitted, "You know, I never really cared much for watches, but after I saw yours, I started to think they are amazing."
One of the most notable moments that captured the attention of social media was when Zuckerberg was seen wearing Greubel Forsey "Hand Made 1", a stunning timepiece by the prestigious Swiss brand Greubel Forsey. His image quickly circulated across various platforms, sparking conversations among watch enthusiasts and collectors alike.
This watch is a masterpiece that represents the pinnacle of horological craftsmanship. Valued at around $900,000 USD, each watch is handcrafted in its entirety, requiring close to 6,000 hours of meticulous work to complete. Due to its intricate design and exclusivity, only three pieces are produced annually, making it one of the most coveted and rare symbols of luxury and precision in the world of haute horlogerie. This unique timepiece exemplifies the fusion of art and engineering, and its rarity makes it a true icon in the world of luxury watches.
The Greubel Forsey Hand Made 1 comes in a case made of white gold, measuring 43.5 mm in diameter and 13.5 mm in thickness. The handmade watch's case is crafted to exude both elegance and durability, while maintaining a refined aesthetic. It offers a water resistance of 30 meters by its elegant engraving crown, making it suitable for everyday wear, though not for extensive exposure to water. The dial and case back are protected by sapphire crystals, ensuring a clear view of the intricate movement within while providing scratch-resistant protection.
The dial of the watch is a masterclass in craftsmanship, featuring a handcrafted openworked design with polished German silver and a partially open screwed dial. The tourbillon, positioned at 7 o'clock, is a captivating focal point, showcasing the intricate mechanical beauty of the timepiece. A floating disc near the central hands displays the small seconds, while the multi-layered dial is enhanced with hand-painted enamel decorations. The blued arrow-shaped hands provide a striking contrast, and a separate white ring surrounding the dial adds a black minute track, further elevating the visual harmony of the watch.
The watch is powered by an in-house, hand-wound tourbillon movement that operates at a frequency of 21,600 beats per hour (3 Hz). It offers a power reserve of 60 hours. The movement is a true testament to traditional watchmaking, with all components meticulously hand-finished. This includes the bridges with polished inner and outer vertical flanks, a unique “gratté main” mainplate, and wheels with hand-polished bevels on both top and bottom. A visible Maltese cross gear on the barrel serves as a stop-work mechanism for the mainspring, adding another layer of complexity. The movement's hand-made parts, such as screws turned individually on a lathe, gears cut manually, and bridges and case parts produced on a manual pantograph, demonstrate the exceptional skill and craftsmanship that goes into every Greubel Forsey creation.
It comes with a Calfskin leather strap and white gold pin buckle. According to the brand, only three watches of this model will be produced each year due to the complexity of their craftsmanship and the extensive time required for their production. The price is approximately USD 900,000, which is roughly equivalent to AED 3,330,000.
