A Selection of Iconic Watches Topped by Middle East Special Releases
It seems that Phillips is not yet done with its string of achievements this month, following the remarkable results of its recent Geneva watch auction. Now, in collaboration with Bacs & Russo, Phillips returns once again, this time to the Far East. From May 23 to 25, the house will present 258 carefully curated pieces at its Asian headquarters in the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong. Some of the key highlights have already been showcased in international previews in Singapore, Taipei, and Geneva, and are now available for full viewing in Hong Kong starting May 16.
This exceptional auction features a remarkable selection of watches that represent the pinnacle of craftsmanship and historical significance. Among the standout pieces is the Patek Philippe Ref. 5970P, believed to be unique and distinguished by its red hands.
As always, independent watchmakers are strongly represented, including notable models such as the Tourbillon Souverain and Chronomètre à Résonance Black Label by F.P. Journe who, as we recently saw, purchased back one of his own creations originally made for Breguet.
For classic Rolex enthusiasts, the auction includes a rare Cosmograph chronograph Ref. 6263 bearing the emblem of the “Quraysh Hawk,” a symbol associated with the United Arab Emirates.
In addition, a special evening session on May 23 will be dedicated to 16 exceptional 19th-century timepieces made specifically for the Chinese market, offering collectors a rare opportunity to acquire pieces of profound cultural and historical value.
Thomas Perazzi, Head of Watches, Asia, and Gertrude Wong, Head of Sale, commented:
“As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Watches Department at Phillips, we are delighted to present an extraordinary selection of timepieces that reflect the artistry and historical depth of watchmaking. We are particularly proud to showcase a museum-worthy collection of pocket watches and mechanical treasures created for the Chinese market, along with rare Cartier watches inspired by Eastern culture. Dating from 1800 to 1930, this collection has been preserved for over three decades and will be presented in our upcoming Hong Kong auction.”
“We also continue to offer iconic wristwatches, including rare references from Patek Philippe and other horological masterpieces that define contemporary collecting. We celebrate the heritage of fine watchmaking and the innovative spirit of modern independent watchmakers and look forward to sharing these exceptional pieces with collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.”
The upcoming auction also shines a spotlight on historically significant and rare watches linked to the United Arab Emirates, the Sultanate of Oman, and the broader Middle East. Among the most notable are:
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona “Quraysh Hawk” Ref. 6263
A very rare chronograph in excellent condition, crafted in stainless steel and dating to 1977. It features a dial bearing the emblem of the UAE, known as the “Quraysh Hawk,” and comes with its original bracelet. The watch was made especially for His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Estimate: €136,000 – €272,000
Patek Philippe Ref. 3588
A rare and attractive white gold watch featuring the Iraqi eagle emblem. These rare Calatrava and Ellipse models, adorned with the eagle and the signature of the late Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, were presented as gifts by senior Iraqi officials.
Estimate: €9,100 – €18,200
Rolex Day-Date Ref. 18038 “Khanjar Dial”
A very rare and well-preserved yellow gold watch with central seconds, day and date functions, and a wooden dial bearing the “Khanjar” emblem. It comes with a guarantee certificate. The watch was made for the Sultanate of Oman.
The late Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said was renowned for his passion for fine watches and commissioned exclusive pieces from prestigious brands like Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Rolex, many of which bear the “Qaboos” or “Khanjar” insignia.
Estimate: €18,200 – €34,200
Patek Philippe Ref. 3700/1 Nautilus “Jumbo” Khanjar Dial
A very rare stainless steel watch with date function and a Khanjar emblem at six o’clock, complete with its original bracelet and archive certificate.
This watch was also made for Oman and is one of only four known examples of this reference in steel with a Khanjar dial. It first appeared at auction in 2016, and its reappearance offers collectors a rare chance to acquire a timepiece that encapsulates the Sultanate’s legacy in haute horlogerie during the 20th century.
Estimate: €440,000 – €847,000
According to Phillips' research, only 11 watches of Ref. 3700 with a Khanjar dial are known to exist, four in steel, four in yellow gold, and three in white gold.
You can explore the full auction catalogue on Phillips’ official website, along with the Phillips team’s personal highlights and curated recommendations from the exhibition.
