A more compact version with a blue dial and no date window for a cleaner look
The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Sport Chronograph was launched in 2023 and was designed to replace the previous Tonda GT collection as a sports watch. The latest addition to the collection is a stunning trio of color variations, which were showcased last year, and you can read our review of them here. Now, the brand returns at the occasion of Watches & Wonders to unveil a new addition with a smaller size and the same elegant sporty design.
The issue of case size remains a constant topic in the watchmaking industry, evolving alongside changes in tastes and trends. For Parmigiani Fleurier, this challenge was accepted, but not through a traditional dress watch. Instead, they chose a sophisticated chronograph movement within their sporty Tonda PF design and scaled it down to provide greater comfort for various wrist sizes while maintaining an elegant character. The brand now presents the new 40mm Tonda PF Sport Chronograph, featuring a simpler dial design, where the date window has been removed, offering a cleaner aesthetic with a focus on the chronograph sub-dials, as the watch is distinctly sporty and contains one of the most advanced chronograph movements in the world of horology.
The new, more compact 40mm stainless steel case is 12.72mm thick, slightly thicker than the 42mm version, which measures 12.4mm in thickness. The design language remains consistent, maintaining the signature elements of the collection. The screw-down crown ensures the watch’s 100m water resistance, while the knurled bezel, crafted from platinum and polished, adds a refined touch. The case surfaces combine both polished and brushed finishes for a dynamic effect.
The dial of this new timepiece is adorned in a mineral blue hue. Both the main dial and the sub-dials feature a hand-guilloché finish with the signature Grain d’Orge pattern, which has become synonymous with the brand. The flange surrounding the dial, as well as the sub-dial rings, are sandblasted, offering a subtle contrast.
Hand-applied 18-carat gold rhodium-plated indices continue the refined design language, while the hour and minute hands are crafted from 18-carat gold, rhodium-plated, and skeletonized in a delta shape. Complementing these are the rhodium-plated steel hands for the chronograph and small seconds, maintaining a cohesive and elegant look. The 30-minute counter and 12-hour chronograph counters are positioned horizontally at 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock, with the running seconds located at 6 o'clock.
Exposed beneath the transparent case back is the automatic caliber PF070, the same movement used in the 42mm edition. Made in-house and COSC-certified, this integrated chronograph movement boasts an impressive 65-hour power reserve and operates at a high frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour (5 Hz). The movement’s aesthetics are enhanced by satin-finished, open-worked bridges with hand-bevelled edges, and a stunning 22-carat rose gold oscillating weight that is skeletonized, polished, and sandblasted, adding a luxurious touch to the watch.
The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Sport Chronograph 40mm is paired with a polished and satin-finished stainless steel bracelet, secured by a stainless steel folding clasp. The watch is priced at CHF 31,500, approximately equivalent to AED 134,500.
