Editorial Breitling Navitimer: The Watch That Does More Than Tell Time
Welcome to the hub of the horoloy
modern take on the original 80’s design
EBEL is a Swiss watch brand, founded in 1911 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, by husband and wife duo, Eugène Blum and Alice levy. The brand's name comes from the initials of the founders, "Eugène Blum and Lévy". EBEL has established itself in the watchmaking industry through a passion for innovation and excellence in design. A historical milestone for EBEL was in 1935, when it became the first Swiss brand to adopt the Western Electric system for accuracy testing. Furthermore, during the Second World War in 1939, EBEL developed and supplied watches to the British Royal Air Force.
In the 1980s, Ebel released the 1911 Chronograph, which was named after the brand's year, a distinguished timepiece crafted in 18k yellow gold. It features the Ebel Caliber 134, based on the famous El Primero 400 movement. This combination of premium materials and exceptional mechanical engineering ensures both quality and performance, making it a noteworthy example of fine watchmaking from that era. Now, EBEL unveils the new 1911 chronograph, with a modern take on the original 80’s design, as it comes in a stainless steel case measuring 44 mm in diameter and 13.65 mm in thickness, crowned by a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating and a sapphire crystal case back, surrounded by a classic EBEL dynamic hexagonal form and five screws on the bezel.
The dial is enhanced with a blue galvanic finish, this timepiece features a rhodium-plated "kissing E" symbol and rhodium-plated indexes. These indexes are adorned with white Super-LumiNova for enhanced visibility. The small seconds subdial is positioned at 9 o’clock, and the 30 minutes chronograph counter at 3 o'clock, with the 12 hours counter at 6 o’clock, and a neatly positioned date window sits at 4:30. The hour and minute hands are facetted and polished, also in rhodium-plated finish, and infused with white Super-LumiNova. Completing the design is a flat, polished rhodium-plated sweep seconds hand, accented with a red tip, adding character to the watch aesthetic.
Powering the timepiece is the Automatic Sellita SW510a, which operates at 28,800 vph (4Hz), with a rotor that incorporates EBEL’s unique ”kissing E” design, a symbol synonymously linked to the brand's heritage and philosophy. The watch comes with a brushed and polished stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp, and an additional black calf-skin strap. It is priced at CHF 3,750, equivalent to AED 15,480.
