Introducing Longines’ First Carbon Watch: The Ultra-Chron Carbon

A Modern Take on an Iconic Diving Watch

Originally launched in 1968, the Longines Ultra-Chron Diver made history as the first diver’s watch to feature a high-frequency movement. By that time, Longines had already cemented its reputation as a pioneer in this technology,. Fast forward to 2022, and Longines unveiled a new-generation Ultra-Chron that paid homage to the original 1968 model while integrating cutting-edge innovations.

In 2024, Longines took another bold step forward with the introduction of the Ultra-Chron Carbon. This latest edition features a case crafted from carbon, a material renowned for its exceptional strength and lightness, marking its debut in a Longines timepiece.

The 43mm case of the Ultra-Chron Carbon is made from unidirectional carbon fiber and epoxy resin. These materials are arranged in strips, placed into a mold, and subjected to high temperatures and pressure before being precision-cut. The result is a distinctive cushion-shaped case that retains the iconic silhouette of its predecessor. A box-shaped sapphire crystal protects the dial, contributing to the watch's total thickness of 13.6mm.

The carbon construction not only enhances the watch’s durability but also creates random fiber patterns, ensuring that each case is visually unique. Despite its robust build, the Ultra-Chron Carbon weighs less than 80 grams, including the strap, thanks to the lightweight properties of carbon.

The Ultra-Chron Carbon is equipped with a fixed bezel featuring an aluminum insert engraved with a scale in increments of 10. The case back, screw-down crown, and bezel are crafted from titanium, further enhancing the watch's durability. With a water resistance of up to 300 meters, the Ultra-Chron Carbon is well-suited for underwater adventures.

The sandblasted anthracite dial boasts a sophisticated grey hue, complemented by a chapter ring marked with twelve applied silver indices. Both the indices and the grey PVD-coated hour and minute hands are treated with Super-LumiNova, offering a striking blue luminescence for optimal legibility in low-light conditions. At 6 o’clock, the original Ultra-Chron logo is proudly displayed, adding a touch of vintage charm.

At the heart of the Ultra-Chron Carbon lies the Longines exclusive high-frequency caliber L.836.6. Operating at 5 Hertz (36,000 vibrations per hour), this movement delivers exceptional stability, particularly when subjected to shocks or changes in position. The movement offers a power reserve of 52 hours and features a silicon balance spring and advanced components, making it ten times more resistant to magnetic fields than the ISO 764 standard. We explained the effect of magnetic fields in detail in this article.

Fully certified as a chronometer by TimeLab, an independent testing laboratory in Geneva, the Ultra-Chron Carbon meets the rigorous ISO 3159 standard. During the 15-day certification process, the entire watch undergoes extensive functional tests in multiple positions and at three different temperatures 8°C, 23°C, and 38°C, ensuring its precision and reliability.

The Ultra-Chron Carbon is paired with a black fabric strap secured by a titanium buckle, perfectly balancing style and practicality. Priced at USD 4,900 approximately AED 18,000.
