The iconic watch now features a new dial, preserving the final essence of its historic engine, never to return
Audemars Piguet has a longstanding connection with celebrities and pop culture, as highlighted by Olivia Crouan, Chief Brand Officer At Audemars Piguet in our interview with her. When asked about AP's collaborations, she noted that it often extends beyond brand ambassadors. In fact, AP has partnered with numerous musicians, with the most recent collaboration being the chocolate ceramic Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar “Cactus Jack,” created with Travis Scott. Now, the brand unveils its latest collaboration with artist and renowned watch collector John Mayer, who brings a fresh, modern perspective to the iconic perpetual calendar edition with the new Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar “John Mayer” Limited Edition.
This timepiece unmistakably embodies the essence of the Royal Oak, a design icon introduced in 1972. It boasts what is arguably the brand’s most emblematic complication: the perpetual calendar. Despite its array of complications, it maintains a remarkably slender profile—a testament to Audemars Piguet's mastery in this realm. Crafted from 18k white gold, the 41mm case stands a mere 9.5mm tall, echoing the distinctive aesthetics of the RO collection. It features the characteristic sharp central case, brushed with polished edges, and the signature octagonal bezel adorned with eight visible screws.
The standout feature of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar this year is its new dial. Alongside the classic indications of a perpetual calendar hours/minutes and four sub-dials displaying date, weekday, month, leap year, and moonphase—it introduces a rarer indication: the current week, depicted on the inner bezel and indicated by a central hand. Setting the John Mayer version apart are the unique detail on the date indicator. Here, the red "31" indication has been replaced with white, while the two numerals of the "31" are slightly smaller and stepped to differentiate them from the adjacent "1."
The primary allure of this timepiece lies in its distinctive dial. Crafted using electroforming, a stamp is created and then pressed into the blank dial. Once the precise pattern is formed, the blue color is applied through PVD, ensuring the crisp lines are maintained, thereby enhancing the sparkling effect that gives this dial its moniker, the “Crystal Sky.”
Adding significance to this release is the farewell to one of Audemars Piguet's most significant calibers: the caliber 5134. the brand's extra-thin perpetual calendar movement introduced in 2015, based on the legendary 2120 architecture first unveiled by Audemars Piguet in 1967.
Limited to just 200 pieces, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar “John Mayer” is priced at USD 180,700, equivalent to 664,000 AED.
