Editorial Breitling Navitimer: The Watch That Does More Than Tell Time
Welcome to the hub of the horoloy
With a distinctive time display style, inspired by the company's long history in watchmaking
Arnold & Son has released two new watches from its most famous Time Pyramid collection. This collection, which was first introduced in 2013, returns to us with a new design and a unique time display that the company uses for the first time in Time Pyramid collection, by arranging the dial’s sub-dials from top to bottom instead of To be as neat as it used to be, this distinctive time display, inspired by the alarm clocks the company manufactured in the 19th century, required redesigning the case and all of the watch's components.
With a fully redesigned case in a new diameter of 42.5 mm and a thickness of 10.72 mm, featuring a slender bezel and available in a choice of either red gold (5N) or platinum (PT950), the distinct features of Time Pyramid’s movement stand out. Its crown at 6 o’clock remains unique in the world of watchmaking. The watch is topped with a domed sapphire with an anti-reflective coating on both sides.
The glass used for the case-back offers yet another new interpretation by Arnold & Son. Neither transparent or opaque, it is composed of an extremely thin disc of aventurine glass in what constitutes a first for this iconic material. Constellated with copper inclusions, aventurine glass originated in the region of Venice, renowned for its glass-making culture. It is said to have been discovered by accident when a workman dropped some copper filings into a vat of molten glass. Once cooled and cut, the dazzling ‘all’avventura’ glass revealed a myriad of sparkles. Arnold & Son has chosen to use this decorated glass as a backdrop for its Time Pyramid. This backdrop allows the light to filter through when the watch is not being worn, revealing interplays of transparency and color.
The expression open-work applies literally here, In creating Time Pyramid, Arnold & Son has revisited, adapted, and extended clockmaking codes. Devoid of a full-sized dial, this wristwatch reveals a skeletonized movement in the shape of a pyramid. Alternatively, it can be seen as taking the form of an anchor, recalling the Arnold & Son logo and making a direct reference to John Arnold’s title as the watchmaker for the Royal Navy. With a white opal minutes circle at 6 o'clock, featuring printed Roman numerals, the watch employs a vertical time display, placing the second subdial in the center of the watch, while the balance wheel sits at 12 o'clock. On either side of the encircled dial, two power-reserve indicators mirror each other, indicating the same information and reflecting the two barrels that power the calibre. The watch features arrow-shaped hands in white for the power reserve hands, while the hour, minute, and second hands are blued, mimicking the color of the screws.
The new edition is powered by the manual winding A&S1615 caliber, featuring a skeletonized pyramid-shaped movement that demonstrates its ingenuity in watchmaking. Below the balance wheel, which sits at 12 o'clock, the gear train highlights an array of finishes that include hand brushed, sunray-brushed wheels, snailed barrels, and blued screws. The caliber’s structure then splits in two beneath a ring in white opal the signature stone of Arnold & Son’s off-centered dials. The caliber operates at 3 Hz/21,600 vph and provides a power reserve of 90 hours.
The red gold edition is limited to 88 pieces and comes with a hand-stitched black calfskin lining with a pin buckle in 18-carat red gold, while the platinum edition is limited to 38 pieces and features blue alligator leather with a pin buckle in platinum (PT950).
The red gold editionis priced at 43,000 Swiss francs, equivalent to 178,000 AED, while the Platinum edition is priced at 54,900 Swiss francs, equivalent to 227,000 AED.
