The dial adorned with two meteorites discovered in the deserts of Oman and Libya
Louis Moinet previously set a world record with the Cosmopolis watch, which included the largest number of meteorites in a single timepiece. The Swiss company, known for its creative designs, now returns with another unique creation, again featuring meteorites.
The new Black Moon watch introduces an innovative display of the lunar phases, with the full moon and new moon represented by two lunar meteorites placed on a domed central disc. This watch presents a novel concept for indicating the lunar cycle, thanks to a purpose-built mechanism of exceptional accuracy, deviating by only one day every 122 years.
The Black Moon features a grade 5 polished and satin-finished titanium case with sleek, modern lines. With a diameter of 40.7mm, it is an extremely light timepiece, weighing only 18 grams. The domed sapphire crystal allows one to appreciate the depth and detail of the dial. The openworked lugs perfectly integrate the strap. The crown is adorned with the emblem of Les Ateliers Louis Moinet, a beautiful Fleur de Lys. The case offers water resistance up to 50 meters.
The dial, surrounding the central lunar disc, is conceived three-dimensionally, offering a stunning interplay. It rests on an aventurine base that evokes the immensity of the starry night skies. The indices are held in place by a central ring and a flange, appearing to float. Optimal visibility in the dark is ensured by a generous application of luminescent material at the center of each indice. The indice at 3 o'clock, framed in red, indicates the moon's position.
Another ingenious detail is the subdial at 9 o’clock, housing sector seconds. In this unique display, the hand, modeled after a compass pointer, uses its longer end to count the first 30 seconds on the upper track, while the shorter end ticks off the next 30 seconds on the lower track.
An openworked zone between 8 and 10 o’clock reveals the balance wheel, escapement, and bridges, highlighting the depth and technical character of this timepiece.
To represent the full moon and the new moon, two lunar meteorites have been placed on the central disc. These rarest fragments from the universe come from two completely different rocks. One is marbled grey, while the other is deep black.
Dhofar 457, discovered in Muscat, Oman. named after the Dhofar desert where it landed, owes its intense black hue. On the BLACK MOON, the Dhofar 457 meteorite, ringed in red, indicates the full moon. It shines elegantly against the black, sanded background of the domed lunar disc.
The Ghadamis 005 meteorite, which bears the name of the Libyan city in which it was discovered in 2022, is distinguished by its gray-white color, which suggests the mysterious beauty of the moon when it reaches its brightest phase.
The sapphire case back unveils the openworked oscillating weight, which showcases the fascinating beauty of the mechanism.
The self-winding caliber was designed by Louis Moinet and developed in collaboration with Concepto. The sober look of this timepiece belies the sophisticated mechanism driving the astronomical moon complication. This complex device, comprising a gear train with a 135-tooth wheel, provides excellent precision. Unlike conventional moon phase displays, the BLACK MOON’s is especially precise, with a deviation of just one day in 122 years. The movement beats at 28,800 vph and offers a 48-hour power reserve.
The watch, adorned with a black alligator leather strap, is a limited edition of only 60 pieces, with the price available upon request.
