Hands on A Blend of Russian Art & Craftsmanship: The Raketa Avant-Garde
Welcome to the hub of the horoloy
Bringing back an icon from the 50’s to the permanent line
In 1930, Nivada Grenchen started producing automatic watches, showcasing its commitment to technological progress in horology. This dedication culminated in the creation of one of its iconic timepieces, the Antarctic, in 1950. The Antarctic was acclaimed as Nivada Grenchen's first waterproof automatic watch and gained prominence when it was chosen by members of the American Navy's Deep Freeze 1 operation to the South Pole (1955-1956).
However, like many in the Swiss mechanical watchmaking industry, Nivada Grenchen faced challenges during the quartz crisis and eventually ceased operations. It wasn't until 2020 that the brand saw a revival, driven by a renewed passion to reintroduce its iconic timepieces to the contemporary market. This revival has been exemplified by releases such as the F77 collection in titanium and the Depthmaster in Bronze, blending the brand's historical releases with modern craftsmanship and materials. Now, the brand revitalizes its iconic pieces with the new MINI series within the Antarctic collection. The Super Antarctic and Antarctic Spider, elegantly resized to 35mm, are now permanent additions to the collection.
The Antarctic Spider comes in a polished and brushed stainless steel case, measuring 35mm in diameter and 10.1mm in thickness, and the dial is protected by a sapphire crystal. Positioned at 3 o’clock is a screw-down crown that controls the three hands on the dial. The watch's screwed caseback ensures water resistance up to 50 meters. The dial is available in sunray silver or black, and features eight spider legs connected to the applied indexes. Additionally, there is a date window at 3 o’clock and the brand’s signature at 9 o’clock.
The Super Antarctic shares similar case specifications with the Antarctic Spider but stands out with its black dial and the absence of the date window. It features indexes filled with either white or cream Super-LumiNova, and the classic-style hands are filled with luminescence. The dial is branded ‘Nivada Aquamatic’ below the 12 o’clock and ‘Super Antarctic 18 Rubis’ above the 6 o’clock. The case back is embossed with a penguin on a gold medallion, reminiscent of the original piece from the 1950s.
Both variants share the same manually wound movement produced by Landeron Swiss Movements, the Landeron 21 caliber. This movement operates at 28,800 vph (4Hz), and offers 36 hours of power reserve.
The watches come with an array for straps options and share the price of USD 850, equivalent to AED 3,200, and there is a bracelet option that ups the price a little bit to USD 1,050, which is equivalent to AED 3,900.
