By Replacing Oxygen with Nitrogen Gas Inside the Case, This Watch Boasts Water Resistance Up to 4,810 Meters
Montblanc, one of the leading brands in the Richemont Group, is renowned for its iconic Minerva chronographs, recently introducing a reverse movement for these watches. Over the past few years, the brand has refocused on sports watches inspired by mountaineering. In 2022, Montblanc ventured into new territory with the Montblanc Iced Sea collection, which features the "0 Oxygen" technique—removing oxygen from the cases. This innovation has become a significant part of the brand's offerings. Today, we present the newest addition to this collection: a diving watch with a date window, utilizing an old technique for dial decorati
The Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 features a Grade 5 titanium case with a diameter of 43 mm and a thickness of 19.4 mm. It is decorated with vertical satin brushing and has a polished bevel on the lugs. The screw-in case back and screw-down crown are made from the same titanium alloy. As the name suggests, there is no oxygen inside the Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810’s case. Oxygen can cause fogging during drastic temperature changes, which can lead to a poorly legible dial and oxidation of the delicate components inside the case. To prevent this, Montblanc replaces oxygen with nitrogen. The unidirectional bezel is equipped with an aluminum insert.
The case provides water resistance up to 4,810 meters, a reference to the height of Europe’s highest mountain, Mont-Blanc. The Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep conforms to the ISO 6425 standard for diving watches. In this detailed article we talked about diving watches and the standards that define them.
The case back features a 3D engraving, achieved through a laser-generated oxidization process that structures the metal with both matte and shiny finishes.
For the dial, Montblanc used its iced water texture, inspired by one of Mont-Blanc’s largest glaciers – the Mer de Glace (Iced Sea). The dial is crafted using a very old technique called gratté-boisé, which adds texture and depth by using a wooden tool to scratch the surface of the dial. requires over 30 separate steps. Starting with a surface stamped with an iced pattern, several layers are applied, each printed, lacquered, polished, and dried before the next can be added. The blue tone is darker, reflecting the color of the sea at greater depths, and features a smoked effect, with a darker color on the periphery (sfumato effect). The dial showcases applied Arabic numerals, hour markers, and hands filled with blue-emitting Super-LumiNova. A date window sits at 3 o’clock.
Powering the watch is the automatic caliber MB 29.29, produced by ValFleurier. Running at 28,800 vph (4 Hz), this movement boasts a generous 5-day power reserve and is certified as a chronometer by the COSC. The watch also undergoes the Montblanc Laboratory Test, ensuring accuracy within +6/-4 seconds per day.
Comes with a black rubber strap closed by a folding clasp with an on-the-fly fine adjustment device, the Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 priced at USD 9,100 which is equivalent to 35,000 AED.
