Celebrating Credor’s 50th anniversary and bringing back an icon
Credor, a high-end watchmaker owned by Seiko, was established in 1974. Seiko has maintained a good relationship with the legendary watch designer Gerald Genta, renowned for his iconic designs such as the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the Patek Philippe Nautilus. In 1979, Genta designed a watch for Credor that encapsulated the essence of a luxury sporty watch with a bracelet: the Credor Locomotive.
The name "Locomotive" symbolized the power of an advancing train and is a French term meaning “driving force.” Genta envisioned this name to propel Credor forward and lead Seiko into a prosperous future. True to his vision, the Locomotive became one of Credor's most famous timepieces. Today, to celebrate its 50th anniversary, Credor has reintroduced the iconic Credor Locomotive as a limited edition in titanium.
When the watch was released back then, it was powered by a quartz movement, made of steel, and measured approximately 35mm in diameter. The new watch comes with an automatic movement and measures 38.8mm in diameter and 8.9mm in thickness, showcasing a stunning hexagonal case and bezel with six functional screws. The case has a brushed finish with polished accents, a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, a screw-down crown placed at 4 o’clock, and a solid titanium caseback secured by six screws, ensuring 100m of water resistance.
The black dial draws inspiration from a steam locomotive, with its pattern meticulously crafted using advanced technology. Based on Genta’s original sketch, a digital rendering of the dial with approximately 1,600 radial lines was created to reinterpret the original design. The dial also features applied markers and hands filled with luminous material, along with a date window at the 3 o'clock position.
The watch is powered by the Calibre CR01, an in-house thin automatic movement that operates at 28,800 vph (4Hz) and offers a 45-hour power reserve. The new bracelet features the same taper and hexagonal intermediary links that gave the original its distinctive character. Now made from titanium, the integrated bracelet is secured with a modern three-fold clasp with a push-button release.
The watch is limited to 300 pieces and is set to be released in August 2024, with a price of USD 12,000, equivalent to AED 44,000.
