A limited edition timepiece for upcoming Vendée Globe sailing race
Ulysse Nardin has long been known for its dedication to marine timekeeping, crafting precise chronometers and instruments for those navigating the seas. The brand pushes this legacy further by embracing eco-friendly innovations, like the Diver Net OPS, a dive watch crafted from recycled steel that aligns with their commitment to sustainability.
Additionally, Ulysse Nardin actively engages with the world of sailing. Now, as the 10th edition of the Vendée Globe—the world’s largest solo, non-stop, unassisted round-the-world sailing race—begins, Ulysse Nardin is serving as the official Partner of the Vendée Globe for the second time and introduces the Diver NET Vendée Globe, its most sustainable watch to date.
The Vendée Globe is a journey that began in 1989, and since then only 200 sailors have embarked on this round-the-world race, with just 114 successfully reaching the finish line. As a solo, non-stop, and unassisted event, skippers compete without any external technical or race support, relying solely on their own skill. Often called “the Everest of the Seas,” the Vendée Globe is considered by many to be the ultimate test of human endurance. While more people have conquered the world’s tallest mountain than have completed this race. To complete the grueling 45,000-kilometer (24,300-mile) course, racers may also have to overcome illness or injury along the way.
In the 10th edition of the Vendée Globe, 40 skippers set off on 10 November 2024 from the Bay of Les Sables d’Olonne on France’s Atlantic coast. The course will lead them south toward the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, then across the Indian and Pacific Oceans past Cape Leeuwin in Australia and Cape Horn in South America, before they make their way north to the finish line back in Les Sables d’Olonne.
The watch case is crafted from 95% recycled stainless steel, and measures 44mm in diameter and 14.81mm thick. It offers 300 meters of water resistance and features a unidirectional rotating bezel made from CarbonFoil—an upcycled material derived entirely from excess carbon fibers used in the production of foils for monohull race boats. Ulysse Nardin developed this innovation in partnership with CDK Technologies, a global expert in manufacturing IMOCA-classified race boats, such as those used in the Vendée Globe. Additionally, the bezel’s minute markers are finished in red or white Super-LumiNova.
The gray sandblasted dial showcases the collection’s signature "X" motif, highlighted in red and blue to match the official colors of the Vendée Globe. This accent spans the dial, from the power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock to the small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock. For enhanced visibility in low-light conditions, the hands and indices are coated in Super-LumiNova. A notable detail is the red accent on the number 10 on the date disc beneath the small seconds, paying tribute to the 10th edition of the Vendée Globe.
The lightly gray-tinted sapphire crystal case back provides a partial view of the Caliber UN-118 and is adorned with a map depicting the Vendée Globe race route. This manufacture movement features a DIAMonSIL escapement, made from an upcycled silicon wafer. The movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4Hz) and offers a 60-hour power reserve.
