A watch where Eco-Conscious Meets Purple Elegance
James Thompson, widely known as "The Black Badger," co-founder of the Scandinavian watch brand Arcanaut, has captivated the horological community with his innovative craftsmanship. The creation of the D'Arc Matter collection composite material is a testament to his ingenuity. By repurposing Scandinavian slate, which is finely ground using industrial coffee grinders, and blending it with an ultra-clear, UV-resistant binder, Thompson has given birth to a distinctive substance first unveiled in the 2021 limited edition release of Arcanaut's D'Arc Matter.
The brand's latest creation, the Arcanaut Arc II Havender model, features the distinctive material in its newest form yet. A closer look at the dial reveals more than just its purple aesthetic allure; it tells an eco-conscious story. The dial incorporates a special layer hand-selected from Scandinavian mussel shells, finely ground into a delicate purple powder that is then used to craft the unique dials.
The watch features a 40.52mm diameter case crafted from micro-blasted and hand-polished stainless steel, with the signature "Pentablock" crown, complemented by a brushed bezel that adds a touch of elegance. The use of sapphire crystal ensures high readability and scratch resistance, essential for the discerning wearer. The caseback is closed and laser-engraved, with a water resistance of up to 100 meters, this timepiece is designed to withstand the rigors of both adventurous and everyday wear.
The dial is a standout feature, boasting an in-house Scandinavian mussel composite that showcases Arcanaut's commitment to utilizing unique materials. This dial is illuminated by Lumicast indexes created by RC Tritec AG, a company renowned for its innovative luminescent which are highly precise luminous 3D-castings in any desired shape. The laser-cut stainless steel hands are finished with Lumicast tips, ensuring optimal visibility in low light conditions.
At the heart of this timepiece beats the Soprod A10, a Swiss automatic movement that delivers a frequency of 28,800 vph (4Hz). The movement is designed to be durable, offering a 42-hour power reserve.
The integrated black rubber strap is fitted with a pin buckle, securing the watch comfortably to the wrist with a modern aesthetic that is versatile for both casual and formal settings. This watch is a limited edition of 33 pieces, and will be available for purchase starting late fall (Oct/Nov), 2023, through both the Arcanaut official website and their US retailer, Collective Horology, with a price of USD 3,920 which is equivalent to AED 14,400.
