A burgundy dial inspired by Chinese traditions to celebrate the Year of the Snake
To mark the upcoming Chinese New Year, which falls at the end of January 2025, IWC has unveiled a remarkable new timepiece inspired by the spirit of the Year of the Snake. This limited-edition watch continues the brand’s tradition of celebrating the Lunar New Year with a stunning combination of artistry and craftsmanship.
Following the success of the Year of the Dragon edition, which featured a Portugieser Chronograph adorned in a burgundy and gold palette, IWC now turns to the elegant Portofino model. The Year of the Snake edition incorporates a moon phase complication, adding a celestial charm to the festive design.
The watch features a stainless steel case measuring 37.1 mm in diameter and 11.3 mm in height. Its sapphire crystal, treated with anti-reflective coating on both sides, ensures exceptional legibility and durability. The see-through sapphire case back offers a captivating view of the intricate movement, while the case boasts a water resistance of up to 50 meters.
At the heart of this timepiece lies a striking burgundy dial, a color deeply symbolic of fire and vitality, traditionally associated with the Lunar New Year in Chinese culture. Positioned at 12 o’clock, the moon phase display is engineered with remarkable precision, deviating from the actual lunar cycle by just one day every 122 years. The golden moon and stars against the burgundy background complement the gold-plated hands and appliques, creating a harmonious and luxurious aesthetic.
Powering the watch is the IWC-manufactured 32800 calibre. This automatic movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and provides an impressive power reserve of five days. Adding a distinctive touch, the gold-plated oscillating mass on the back is shaped like a snake, a tribute to the Year of the Snake.
The Portofino Automatic Moon Phase 37 is equipped with two calfskin straps, one in black and the other in burgundy, both secured with a deployment clasp. A convenient quick-change system allows wearers to effortlessly switch between straps.
Limited to just 500 pieces, this exquisite timepiece is priced at 8,600 CHF, approximately 36,000 AED.
