A New GMT model highlights the aesthetic appeal and distinctive design of the iconic DB25 collection
De Bethune is one of the foremost independent watch brands, renowned for its distinctive approach that masterfully blends traditional watchmaking codes with innovative complications, the journey of this brand we explored in this article.
While many watch brands were forced to pause during the global pandemic, De Bethune took a different approach. Viewing the crisis as an opportunity, the brand set out to design one of its most exciting releases to date. The De Bethune team challenged themselves to create a travel watch at a time when travel was restricted, ensuring that once the world resumed normalcy, it would be ready for the wrists of discerning globetrotters. The result was the unveiling of the DB25GMT Starry Varius, a practical GMT model that joins its more intricate predecessor, the DB25 World Traveller of 2016.
Marking De Bethune’s 29th in-house caliber, Denis Flageollet has integrated a second time zone complication into the stunning DB25 Starry Varius. This captivating timepiece features a ‘mysterious’ GMT display, where a rotating sphere not only indicates the time but also serves as a day/night indicator. Today, they add even more elegance to this masterpiece with the unveiling of a new version in rose gold.
The new DB25GMT Starry Varius upholds the signature design elements of the collection, now introduced in rose gold for the first time, whereas previous editions were crafted in grade 5 titanium. The case measures 42 mm in diameter and 11.8 mm in height. This model leans more towards a classical aesthetic compared to the DB28 collection, featuring a crown at 3 o'clock with three positions for operating various functions. The hollowed lugs complement its refined, traditional design. A quick date corrector is located at 6 o'clock. Both the dial and the caseback are protected by sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective coating.
The dial is a true work of art, composed of various sections crafted from different materials and finishes. The central dial is divided into two parts: blue polished titanium adorned with white gold pins, and a radiant silver microlight decoration featuring a sunburst insert in polished rose gold. At the center are the elegantly curved hands in rose gold for the hours and minutes, while the date pointer is heat-blued.
Other dial elements include a curved date ring in blued titanium, a silver curved hour ring, a rose gold curved minute ring, Arabic numerals for the hours, and blue dots representing the minutes.
Additionally, there is a silver 24-hour sub-dial with two-tone decals. the function of the diminutive sphere made of rose gold and blued titanium. Instead of a regular GMT hand, both the time and the day/night function are indicated by the rotating sphere.
Under the transparent caseback lies the hand-wound Calibre DB2507, De Bethune’s 29th movement, launched in 2021. This movement debuted with the release of the DB25GMT Starry Varius, marking a significant advancement in their GMT collection.
The hand-wound movement beats at 4 Hz and offers a five-day power reserve. Packed with De Bethune’s patented technology, it includes two self-regulating mainspring barrels. The titanium balance wheel, fitted with white gold weights, neutralizes the effects of temperature variations. The escape wheel is made of silicon, and the movement features a triple pare-chute shock-absorbing system, securing the regulator with a titanium bridge (a De Bethune innovation from 2005).
The watch is paired with an extra-supple alligator leather strap with alligator lining, and a pin buckle in rose gold 5N. The price is available upon request.
