The Cobb III Edition Features a Colorful Dial in Homage to Britain's Motor Racing Heritage
Launched in 2015, Farer is an independent British watch company founded on the principles of unique and colorful design, combining vintage aesthetics with modern craftsmanship. Their watch collection typically includes several lines, each with its own distinct style and features.
Farer presents a new addition to its Chronograph Collection. More than just a chronograph, this new timepiece goes further by combining the GMT function with its mono-pusher chronograph, the Cobb watch.
Named after John Cobb, a British racing motorist born in 1899, who broke the world land speed record in 1939 and raised it again in 1947 to 394.19 mph. Cobb tragically died in 1952 while attempting to break the world water speed record at Loch Ness, Scotland, in the jet speedboat Crusader at speeds exceeding 200 mph. The boat hit an unexplained wake, was ripped apart, and Cobb was killed. The new Cobb III continues to honor his legacy.
The 41mm steel case comes with a sporty design inspired by chronograph watches from the seventies, features a brushed finish on its top with a polished bezel. The sides are engraved with a crosshatched 'harlequin' pattern with a brushed border that breaks up the side profile. The case is water-resistant to 100 meters, allowing it to be worn almost anywhere without fear. The large crown has a brass insert with the company logo, while the polished mono-pusher for the chronograph is situated at 2 o’clock.
The case is 14.5mm thick with a substantial 2.25mm double-domed sapphire crystal. While it may seem large, the multitude of functions and the detailed dial make it understandable.
The Cobb’s dial is sky blue with a sunburst finish, while the indices are polished batons filled with Super-LumiNova. Both subdials are a matte cream color, matching the rehaut and complementing the blue dial. The 30-minute counter is at the 12 o’clock position, while the running seconds dial is at 9 o’clock. Opposite this is the framed date window at 3 o'clock, featuring a cream date wheel to match the sub-dials.
The tapered hands on the Cobb are painted a glossy navy blue and are filled with cream Super-LumiNova. Alongside these is a polished GMT hand with a glossy blue arrow filled with yellow lume to match the sector on the top subdial. The chronograph seconds hand is bright orange, matching the seconds hand on the 30-minute subdial and the bottom half of the 24-hour scale, while the top half matches the hour and minute hands. These elements come together to create a bright, playful watch that remains functional and highly legible.
The Cobb is powered by the Sellita SW530 M MP movement. This manually wound caliber beats at 28,800 VPH (4Hz) and has a 62-hour power reserve. The movement is finished to Sellita's D4 standard, their highest option. This means the movement is decorated with snailed brushed finishes, a custom-decorated bridge, and blued screws, making it a sight worth seeing through the sapphire crystal case back.
The Cobb III comes with a St Venere leather strap with a 316L stainless steel buckle. The watch is available for preorders now and is priced at GBP 1,995, which is equivalent to 9,500 AED.
