New sizes and upgraded mechanics pay tribute to the golden age of diving watches
Founded in 1884, Breitling is one of Switzerland’s most respected watchmakers, known for pioneering the modern chronograph and crafting precision instruments for explorers of air, land, and sea. Over the years, the brand has mastered the art of balancing technical innovation with timeless aesthetics. This philosophy is particularly evident in the Superocean Heritage, a collection that first emerged in 1957 as a diver’s watch with uncommon elegance. While most dive watches of the time leaned heavily into utilitarian design, Breitling’s Ref. 1004 and Ref. 807 introduced sleek profiles, signature spear-and-arrow hands, and an undeniable sense of style.
For 2025, Breitling unveils the latest evolution of the Superocean Heritage collection. With refined proportions, upgraded mechanics, and a design language that effortlessly bridges the past and present, the updated models are a tribute to both the golden age of diving and the spirit of modern leisure. The collection ranges with automatic models, in 44 mm, 42 mm, and 40 mm introduce the B31 movement, Breitling’s first exclusive three-hand manufacture caliber, newly launched in March. A further 36 mm houses the Caliber 10 automatic movement. It features a streamlined palette of black, blue, and green dials, each paired with scratch-resistant ceramic bezels. Cambered sapphire crystals and Super-LumiNova luminescent hands and indices further enhance the watches' durability and legibility.
Among the standout pieces is the Superocean Heritage B31 Automatic 40 Kelly Slater, a limited-edition model created in tribute to the surfing legend as he steps away from professional competition. Housed in a 40mm stainless-steel case with a thickness of just 11.73mm, the watch features a distinctive blue dial with a stamped tropical foliage pattern inspired by Hawaii, where Slater now calls home. Its unidirectional ceramic bezel echoes the dial color, creating a harmonious design that reflects the laid-back surf lifestyle. The screw-down sapphire crystal caseback bears the engraving “One of 500” alongside Slater’s name, underscoring the watch’s exclusivity.
Inside beats Breitling’s newly introduced Caliber B31, a COSC-certified automatic movement offering a robust 78-hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz). Buyers can choose between a blue rubber strap or a stainless-steel mesh bracelet, both fastened with folding clasps.
While the Kelly Slater edition tells a compelling personal story, the 2025 Superocean Heritage collection also makes room for models that lean into classic proportions. The Superocean Heritage B01 Chronograph 42 is a particularly good example. Measuring 42mm in diameter and 14.55mm thick, it is available in stainless steel or a two-tone version that incorporates traceable 18k red gold.
Its dial options, blue, green, or black, are matched with ceramic bezels, and the chronograph layout remains symmetrical and clean, aided by tone-on-tone subdials and a subtle date aperture at six o’clock. At its core is the Breitling Manufacture Caliber 01, an industry-leading movement with a 70-hour power reserve, column-wheel control, and a vertical clutch. Like the rest of the collection, this chronograph is water-resistant to 200 meters and offers a choice between rubber or steel mesh straps.
For those seeking a larger presence on the wrist without compromising refinement, the Superocean Heritage B31 Automatic 44 offers the same in-house movement found in the Kelly Slater model. Its 44mm case and 12.17mm thickness make it the boldest of the B31-equipped variants. Available in stainless steel or steel with red gold accents, and in all three dial colors. The prices of all variants range from €5,250 / AED 21,310, to €10,200 / AED 41,975.
